Her trunk flew open.
Balloons flew out!

Eddy laughed hard.
His dumper shook.
“What’s your name?” asked Poppy.
Eddy told her.
Two trucks rolled over.
“Eddy,” said Poppy.
“Meet Dipper and Jeb.”
“I’m an ice cream truck,” said Dipper.
“I play music.”
“I move dirt,” said Jeb.
He rolled off the lot.
He scooped some dirt.
“Hey, Eddy,” said Jeb.
“Want to carry this dirt?”
“No, thanks,” said Eddy.
“I don’t like to carry dirt.”
Everyone looked surprised.
“What do you like to do?” asked Dipper.
Eddy grinned.
“I like to race!”

“Two-dollar special high-bounce balls!”

the man called.Bruce watched as the man bounced the ball.

“Mom! Mom! I want to buy a special high-bounce ball!”

Bruce counted the money from his pocket.

“I have enough,” he said, and gave the man two dollars.

“Don’t take it out of its box until we get home,” mom said.”

They are so bouncy it might get lost.”

“I am going to do the best bouncing,” Bruce said.

He looked at the ball through the window in the box.

When they were home, Bruce opened the box.”Don’t bounce it inside,” mom said.

“Those balls are so bouncy you may break something.”

“I hope it doesn’t get lost in the clouds,” Bruce said.”I will give it a small bounce, first.”

Bruce took the ball outside to his sand pit.

He dropped it into the sand, and jumped back so it would not hit him.

But the ball just sank a little way into the sand, and stayed there.

Bruce picked the ball up, and threw it as hard as he could into the sandpit.

The ball made a dent in the sand, and stayed there.

“Mom! Mom! Mom,” Bruce shouted.”My special high-bounce ball is broken!”

Mom came out and looked at the ball.

“It seems all right,” she said.She threw it down onto the lawn.

The ball gave a small bounce, then fell back onto the grass and stayed there.

“See!” Bruce said. “It’s broken! I am going to take it back!”

“Try it on the path, first,” mom said.

Bruce threw the ball down onto the path as hard as he could throw.

The ball shot up into the air.

The ball came down on the roof of the house next door.

It went up and up and up again.

“It’s fixed!” Bruce shouted.”I hope it’s not lost too,” mom said.

The ball came down, and down, and down, and landed in the sand pit with a soft sound.

It made a small dent in the sand and stayed there.

“It bounces on hard things,” Bruce said,”but it does not bounce at all in soft sand.

“”Try it on other things,” mom said.

Bruce tried to bounce it in a bucket of water.

It made a good splash, but did not bounce at all.

He tried to bounce it on his bed.

It made a small wet patch, but did not bounce at all.

He tried to bounce it on the carpet.

It bounced a bit, but not like a special high-bounce ball should.

He bounced it on the tiles of the bathroom floor.It shot up and hit the ceiling.

Then it came back to the tiles;

and up nearly to the ceiling again.So Bruce caught it before it broke anything.

Earth Day, Every Day!

What a Mess!

My name’s Trina. I’m an Earthling.

I live here on planet Earth. So do trees and bees and manatees.

Unless you’re from Mars, you’re an earthling too.

People don’t always take good care of our Earth home. We do things that hurt the Earth.

We make the air dirty. We throw away too much. We waste power.

Mom says people should clean up their own messes.

Earthlings made this Earth mess. So we Earthling should fix it!

It’s a job for everyone.

Chapter 2:

Miss Big Mouth

My brother calls me Miss Big Mouth. So I used my big mouth to help the Earth.

Last week, I asked everyone I know to plan something for Earth Day.

Today was finally the big day!

(April, 22)

Earth Day happens once a year, on that day,

people everywhere remember to help the Earth.

Earth Day also reminds us to take care of Earth all year long!

My teacher taught my class how to plant trees.

Everyone got to help someday our trees will grow to be much taller than we are.

They’ll make good home for birds.

You can also plant special gardens to feed bees and butterflies.

And trees and plants aren’t just helpful to animals.

They also clean the air we all breathe.

My friends formed an Earth Day club.

We had our first meeting at lunch.

Earth’s problems mean problems for animals too.

Even my favorite tigers are having trouble.

so our club decided to save money to help animals.

People have formed many groups to help animals in trouble.

The groups find ways to protect animals and the places they live.

They study the animals to figure out new ways to help them.

You can learn more about these groups on the internet.

Ask your teacher or a parent to help you look.

Wizard and Cat 6: The King and Queen
In the Throne Room, a servant blew a trumpet.
“The king and queen are now entering!”
Everyone bowed.
“Wow,” Tom whispered.

The king and queen sat on their thrones.

The queen was holding a book.

Suddenly she frowned. “Oh no!”

“I lost my royal bookmark.”

“Line up, wizards!” Dirk snapped.

He bowed before the king and queen again.

“The wizards will now do their best spells.”

“Yikes.” Tom gulped.

“I hope I’m ready, Cat,” he whispered.

Dirk led a girl to the king and queen.

“This is my daughter, Ann,” Dirk said proudly.

Ann bowed and then waved her wand. Poof!

Dozens of beautiful white birds appeared.

The king and queen clapped.

Then all the other wizards did their spells.

At last it was Tom’s turn.

“Your Majesties.” Tom bowed.

“I’m pleased to meet—”

“Ah-choo!” The queen suddenly sneezed loudly.

“AH-CHOO!” The queen sneezed again.

The king frowned.

“My dear,” he said. “Are you okay?”

“Please,” Tom said. “Take my handkerchief.”

He reached into his pocket.

But Tom did not pull out his handkerchief.

He pulled out . . .

“A cat!” The queen shrieked. “Ah-choo!”

“A cat?” The king leaped to his feet.

“No cats in the palace!”
